You’ll usually have the surgery as an out-patient (you won’t need to stay overnight), and you may have it under general or spinal anaesthesia. For example, if you smoke, you’ll be asked to stop because it increases your risk of getting a chest and wound infection, and slows healing time. Your surgeon will explain what else you need to do to prepare for your operation. It also incorporates more general light activities such as walking and swimming. This usually involves specific physiotherapy exercises designed to strengthen your leg muscles and improve your range of motion. You’re likely to be asked to follow a preoperative rehabilitation programme during this time. This might be within a couple of weeks after your injury, but it varies from person to person. Your surgeon is likely to delay surgery until any swelling has gone down and you’ve regained near-to-full range of movement in your knee. If you’re happy to go ahead with the procedure, you’ll be asked to sign a consent form – so it’s important to make sure you feel properly informed. You should be given time to make sure you understand everything and have an opportunity to ask any questions. Your surgeon will explain exactly what will happen during the procedure, what to expect afterwards and the risk of potential complications.

As with all surgical procedures, there’s also a risk of complications, and there’s a possibility that the procedure may not work. You’ll also need to stick to an exercise regime for several months after your surgery to help you recover. If you have an active job, then you may need to take up to six months off work. However, you need to prepare yourself for the fact that it can take six months to fully recover from ACL reconstruction. It might mean you’re able to return to your usual level of activity or your usual sports. Having ACL reconstruction could help to stabilise your knee, relieve pain and reduce the risk of further knee injury.

It’s important to think about the risks and benefits of surgery and to talk this through with your surgeon.

However, there are certain situations when surgery is more likely to be recommended. Your doctor or surgeon will go through your treatment options and explain what would work best for you. Not everyone with an ACL injury needs surgery. If you have an ACL injury and your knee is unstable (it gives way), ACL reconstruction may be an option for you.
